Best Practices for Treating Minors in Legally Complicated Cases

About this live event

Keeping your i's dotted and t's crossed when working with legally complicated cases. Informed consents, confidentiality, and navigating legal involvement. We'll cover the basics but there are many areas within which a deeper dive may be desired The training will be recorded and available for one week following the event. The recording will then be made into a self-paced course for anyone who is not available on the day of the event. This should be ready approximately one month following the event

Agenda

Consent to treat a minor when caregivers are separating or divorced parents

Consent to treat a minor when minor is consenting to their own treatment

Communication With Parents during Treatment: (ie Establishing/upholding expectations from onset: paperwork, intake process, orientation etc.)

Handling Requests for Documentation: From parents, Attorneys, Subpoenas etc.

CPA, GAL, BIA roles - including ability for minor to influence their own custody desires

  • Laura Goldstein, LCMFT

    Laura Goldstein is a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist in Rockville MD. She is the founder and Executive Director of Montgomery County Counseling Center and the founder of TheraCourses! She has worked across multiple settings including in-home behavioral health services, IOPS for adolescent dual diagnosis treatment and young adults struggling to launch, and her private practice. 

    Laura is trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) from Behavioral Tech and has been fine tuning the application of DBT into individual therapy, parent coaching, and family therapy. She also trained in 2017 with The Gottman Couples Method, which is a seamless integration of DBT concepts when working with couples. With over 12 years of experience in the field, Laura has established herself as a local expert in relationship therapy, public speaking, and therapy practice management.

    In 2022, she launched TheraCourses, an e-course platform with innovative solutions to address the obstacles of accessing affordable psychoeducation that parents need in order to prevent and/or treat the adolescent mental health crisis we face today.

CE Process Info

Each professional is responsible for the individual requirements as stipulated by his/her licensing agency. Please contact your individual licensing board/regulatory agency to review continuing education requirements for licensure renewal. Please note: You must attend "live" (in real-time) for the duration of the training and complete the post course evaluation to earn CE credits.

  • Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)

    Montgomery County Counseling Center Provider #1935, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continue Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continued education credit. ACE provider approval period: (7/22/2024-7/22/2025). Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 clinical continuing education credits.

  1.  This virtual event will be hosted via Zoom Webinar, and you may be prompted to download or upgrade your Zoom app if using a mobile device. A strong WiFi connection will be required for best quality.
  2. We recommend clicking your "Join Webinar" button early and checking that your speakers are on before the event begins. Please do not worry about being seen or heard! Attendee video feeds and mics are turned off by default when entering a webinar. You will be able to ask questions via the Q&A feature.
  3. Please respect that no copying, recording, or distribution of live session content is allowed. CE's are provided for the "live" sessions only. CE's will not be available for the recordings.

Sara Varga, LCSW-C, who is the social work consultant for Montgomery County Counseling Center Sponsored Events that are approved by ASWB, is involved in resolving all concerns to prevent bias and provide resolution and improve future courses.

All grievances will be reported and kept on record along with all actions taken to address the grievance, whether the complaint was made to the provider, ASWB, or another entity. These records will be provided to ASWB ACE program when requested.
